In the 1930s, Surprise was a square mile of town and a lot of dirt.

Fast-forward to today. It has 104,000 residents, tenfold the population it had little more than a decade ago. Developers stream in for housing permits after a record year two years ago, when 7,700 were issued. By 2050, the city estimates it will have a million residents.
